Honey and Diabetes: What Kashmiri Honey Buyers Should Know

If you've ever wondered whether Kashmiri honey is "safe" for diabetics, you're not alone — it's one of the questions we get asked the most at Al Zareen. So we made a video about it, and here's the short version.

The short answer: it depends — and it's not our call to make

Kashmir honey, like any honey, is natural — but it's still a form of sugar. That means it can raise blood glucose levels, just like any other sweetener — only slower, thanks to its mix of fructose and glucose.

Some people with diabetes may be able to include small amounts of raw honey in their diet. Others may not, depending on:

    • How well-controlled their blood sugar already is
    • What medications or insulin they're on
    • Their overall diet and activity level

There's no one-size-fits-all answer — and definitely no "yes, honey is fine for everyone" claim we're willing to make.

Why we won't tell you a quantity

You'll find plenty of articles online confidently listing "1 teaspoon a day" or similar numbers for diabetics. We're not going to do that here. Every diabetic's body responds differently, and a safe quantity for one person could be too much for another.

The only person who can actually answer this for you is your doctor. They know your blood sugar history, your medication, and your body — we don't, and no blog post honestly can.

AL Zareen explaining kashmiri honey and blood sugar impact

    What we can tell you

    • Raw Kashmiri honey retains more of its natural enzymes and nutrients compared to heavily processed sugar
    • Varieties like Sidr honey are prized for their purity, but purity doesn't change the fact that it's still sugar for blood-glucose purposes
    • It still counts as sugar intake and should be factored into your daily carb count if you're diabetic
    • Any change to your diet — including adding honey — is worth discussing with your doctor first, especially if you're on diabetes medication

We cover this in more detail in our latest video ,including why this isn't a simple yes/no question.

Bottom line: Kashmiri honey is a natural product, not a medical one. If you're diabetic and curious about adding it to your diet, talk to your doctor before deciding on quantity or frequency. We'd rather give you an honest "ask your doctor" than a number that could do more harm than good.

At Al Zareen, we source our raw Kashmiri honey directly and never make health claims we can't back — your doctor always has the final word.
